Ixora (Flame of the Forests) - care in the milder conditions
Such an evergreen shrub like Ixora (Ixora) is found in nature in the tropical forests of Asia. He is also called "forest fire". There are approximately 400 plant species in this genus. It is directly related to the madder family.
In India, this plant is considered medicinal, and it is used in traditional medicine. So, the roots are used for fever and diarrhea, and leaflets have antiseptic properties.
In indoor conditions, this plant can reach a height of 100 centimeters. Ixora leaves are leathery and shiny. Flowers are located at the ends of the stems. They are collected in beautiful inflorescences spherical or umbrella-shaped. Flowers can be colored in pink, white, orange, red, yellow, as well as peach. At the end of each shoot there are a lot of inflorescences. If the conditions are favorable, then flowering lasts from spring to autumn.
As a rule, 2 species are grown at home, namely: bright red ixor and javanese ixor.
Ixora care at home
Loves the light very much. It should be bright and scattered. In the autumn-winter period, it is recommended that Ixora be placed on the windowsill of a window located in the southern part of the room, and in the warm season - in the eastern or western.
He loves warmth. In the summer, 18–20 degrees, and in the winter - 15–18 degrees.
Need high humidity. In the warm season, ixor should be systematically sprayed.
How to water
It should be watered with slightly warm and always soft water. In winter, watering should be moderate, and in summer - plentiful. Watering at room temperature is used for watering in the warm season, and this procedure is performed after the topsoil has dried. The soil should always be slightly moistened.
How to transplant
Transplantation is carried out as necessary in the spring. The flower pot should be small in size, as the root of this plant is quite small.
Prefers acidic soil. When planting in alkaline earth, its foliage acquires a yellow tint, and the development of ixora is disrupted. In order to make a suitable soil mixture, it is necessary to mix the sheet and turf soil with sand and peat.
You need to fertilize the plant in the spring-summer period 2 times a month. For this, a complex fertilizer for flowering plants is used. In autumn and winter, you can’t feed him.
Cut off ½ of the shoots after flowering. In spring, pruning is not performed, because the formation of inflorescences occurs at the tips of overgrown young shoots.
Such a plant can be propagated by cuttings or seeds.
Sowing seeds is made in small plates. The seeds must be sprinkled with a thin layer of soil, gently pour with a sprayer and cover with a film. Put the dishes in a warm place. The first shoots appear in 2-3 weeks.
Cuttings are pruned in spring, until buds are formed. They are planted in light soil mixed with sand and covered with a film. Cuttings are completely rooted after about a couple of months, but only if they stand in a warm place (25-30 degrees).
Diseases and pests
Thrips, spider mites, scale insects, and also nematodes can settle on ixor. If you water it with hard and cold water too often, then chlorosis can develop.
- Pale leaflets, slow growth, lack of flowering - lack of light or lack of nutrients.
- Leaflets turn yellow and fall off - low humidity or a plant is watered with cold water.
- On the leaves yellowness similar to stains ― It is necessary to acidify the earth.
- Bud drop - excessively dry air or a pot was rearranged from place to place.
