Dolichos: planting and care in the open ground, growing from seeds
The climbing perennial dolichos is a member of the Legume family. In people, this plant is also called Egyptian beans, curly lilacs, and also kokornik.
Under natural conditions, dolichos can be met in East Africa. In regions with mild and warm winters, this flower is grown as a perennial, but in areas with a more severe climate, it is grown as an annual plant. Flowering is observed in mid-July. Long racemose inflorescences consist of very small white or purple flowers. The flowers have a pleasant aroma, and it is a bit like the smell of lilac. Quite often this plant is cultivated as a decorative culture, while it is perfect for decorating fences, arbors and decorative arches.
This curly liana has large leafy plates of a deep green color, against which the inflorescences of a pink or pale violet hue, as well as purple pods, look very impressive. The height of such a vine is about 600 centimeters, which allows it to be combined with other climbing plants. Therefore, it is often used for vertical gardening, creating spectacular compositions. The fruits of such a plant have healing properties, and they are also eaten. A lot of delicious dishes are prepared from dolichos beans.
Planting and caring for dolichos in open ground
In middle latitudes, dolichos, as a rule, is grown through seedlings. The seeds of such a plant, collected by hand, remain viable for 5 years. You can sow seeds directly in open ground, do it in May. However, in this case, the bush will grow for a very long time, and the first flowers will not be visible until the end of August. Because of this, experienced gardeners recommend growing dolichos through seedlings.
Sowing seeds is carried out in late February. Seed material needs pre-sowing preparation. To do this, it is placed on moistened gauze and cleaned in a warm place. But before soaking the seeds, the cover of each bean must be carefully pierced with a sharp needle, and do not touch the white spot on the rib, because it is in this place that the germinal zone is located (a germ appears from it).
To get started, fill small cups with a substrate consisting of sand, leaf turf and peat. One seed is sown in each container, and it needs to be planted in the soil mixture to a depth of about 40 mm. Crops are gently moistened from the spray gun, and on top of them they are covered with a film and transferred to a warm place with diffused light. In order for the seedlings to appear as quickly as possible, do not forget to regularly ventilate and moisten the crops from the spray gun, and also make sure that they are warm (about 23 degrees).

Planting seedlings in the ground
When the seedlings grow and get stronger, they are transplanted into the garden. Landing is carried out in May after the establishment of warm weather, when the threat of spring frost will be left behind. In order for the seedlings to take root as quickly as possible and better, they are carefully transferred from the cups to the prepared hole, while trying to keep the earth lump intact. The distance between the planting holes can vary from 0.2 to 0.4 meters. Near the planting, immediately place a support, which should be at least 200 cm high. For planting, choose a sunny area, because this plant is light and heat-loving. The site still chosen for planting dolichos should be reliably protected from strong winds and drafts, because they can greatly harm it and even cause the death of bushes.
The soil on the site should be loose, nutritious and neutral. Before planting seedlings, do not forget to dig the site.If the soil is depleted, then about 30 days before the seedlings are planted, rotted compost is introduced into it.
This plant needs systematic watering. Make sure that the soil surface is constantly moist, but do not allow fluid to stagnate in the roots, otherwise rot may appear on the root system. Systematically, once every three days, pour a not very large amount of water under each plant. In the hot dry season, the frequency of watering is increased to 1 time in 2 days. Do not forget to loosen the surface of the soil mixture after each watering, as well as remove weeds.
For a plant, it is recommended to select areas with a loose nutrient soil of a neutral reaction. It should pass water and air well, and also contain a minimum amount of nitrogen. Before planting seedlings, the soil in the area is digged, and rotted organic fertilizer is added to it, as well as peat or sand. If the soil on the site is acidic, then during digging a little lime or charcoal is also introduced into it.

Dolichos is transplanted only once, when it is planted from a seedling tank in open ground. A transplant is carried out by transshipment, for this, gently pull the plant along with a lump of earth out of the cup and carefully place it in the hole. Seedlings planted in the soil must be watered, and it is recommended that the soil surface near them be covered with a layer of mulch so that moisture evaporates more slowly. Dry peat can be used for this.
Dolichos should be regularly fed once a month with complex mineral fertilizer. If the vine is lacking in nutrients, it will remain spectacular and attractive until the frost.
Bushes grown through seedlings begin to bloom in June. On them appear long fragrant racemose inflorescences of a yellow, lilac, white or pink hue. The lifespan of one inflorescence is about 3 weeks, which is why with good care, the bushes can bloom for a very long time (until the frost). When the inflorescence fades, the fruits of a dark purple color, represented by pods, form on it, they also have a high decorative effect, like the flowers themselves. Fruits grow in bunches, inside them there are 2–4 beans. Each seed has a speck of white on its rib. They are edible and are widely used in preparing a variety of dishes.
Dolichos does not need to be cut. The only thing, before the side branches grow, you need to regularly pinch the tops of the stems. And do not forget to install a support near the landing, along which the bush can freely curl up.
In mid-latitudes, dolichos is cultivated as an annual plant, therefore, it is not necessary to prepare it for wintering. After the withering of the bushes begins, they are simply removed from the site and destroyed.

As mentioned above, dolichos in the middle latitudes is grown from seeds, and it can be propagated both in seedling and in seedling method. If you decide to sow the seeds directly in the open ground, then you should consider that the bushes will grow very long and begin to bloom only in the last summer weeks. That is why gardeners prefer to grow such a flower through seedlings, and how to do this is described in great detail above in the section “Growing seedlings”.
Disease and pests
A plant like dolichos is highly resistant to disease. However, it may suffer due to improper care, for example, leaves may turn yellow at the bush or it may not bloom. In order for the creepers to turn green again and bloom magnificently, they need to be fed. Also in the future they should provide regular feeding. Remember that this flower reacts extremely negatively to nutrient deficiencies.
Pests also try to circumvent this vine. However, aphids or caterpillars can still harm her. If you notice them on the bushes, then spray the foliage with a solution of the Aktellik insecticide as soon as possible, while remembering to follow the instructions that you can find on the packaging.
